Frequently asked questions
What is the Personal Savings Allowance?
It's the amount of savings interest you can earn each year before paying tax: £1,000 for basic-rate taxpayers, £500 for higher-rate, and nothing for additional-rate taxpayers.
How is savings interest taxed?
Interest above your allowance is taxed at your normal income tax rate. HMRC usually collects it by adjusting your tax code rather than sending a bill.
Does an ISA count towards this?
No. Interest earned inside a cash ISA is tax-free and doesn't use up your Personal Savings Allowance, which is one reason ISAs are handy for larger savings.
